The Argument Against Federal Legislation for Union 'Card Check'

Let Freedom Ring announces the release of two television commercials that focus on union elections and the misnamed “Employee Free Choice Act,” also known as “Card Check”. The ads may be viewed at www.ZapCardCheck.com, with one of the ads shown above.

Colin Hanna, president of Let Freedom Ring states, “While most other anti-card check advertising focuses on either the job-crushing effect or the classic, management vs. labor clash due to the practice of card check, our ad uniquely focuses on the worker who would be stripped of the precious democratic right to a secret ballot.”

Scores of other business groups have come out against the newly launched legislation, including Associated General Contractors and an association of retailers.

The script for Let Freedom Ring’s ad campaign to encourage U.S. Senators to vote against card check follows:

Announcer: “Common Sense Thinking on Union Elections. Nothing is more fundamental to Democracy than the secret ballot.”

Rod W.: “Where I am, if they want to unionize and they impose this ‘card check’ thing then, I’m gonna feel like I’m ostracized because I chose not to be a part of that.”

Announcer: “There’s a proposal in Congress that could force workers to sign a card right in front of the union organizer instead of by secret ballot. Some call it, “card check.”

Rod W: “Union ‘card check’ - I definitely think it’s intimidating because it’s a violation of one, your privacy. You shouldn’t have to feel intimidated whether to check “yes” or “no” just because you’re standing in front of an individual that may be representing that union.”

Announcer: “Workers now have the right to decide by secret ballot--privately, and free of intimidation--whether or not to join a union.”

Announcer: “If preserving this democratic right is important to you, then tell your Senators to vote against Card Check. Make the call right now.”

The National Black Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Harry Alford stated that if the bill was enacted it will cost African Americans jobs.

Congressional Republicans led by Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) are sponsoring legislation to protect the right of workers to have a secret ballot when they are deciding whether they want a labor union to represent them.
