Spring Issue: Award Winning Green Homes Designed and Built with the SIP System

Scott Homes (Olympia, WA) earned the 2009 EnergyValue Housing Awards (EVHA) "Builder of the Year" from the NAHB Research Center, a subsidiary of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). The EVHA, presented in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), are the nation's preeminent energy efficiency awards honoring builders who voluntarily incorporate energy efficiency into all aspects of new home construction. Scott Homes also received an EVHA Gold Award for custom homes built in cold climates. The award judges describe Scott Homes as, “Doing it all very well, but constantly looking for ways to improve. They truly understand the value of building green.”Scott Homes earned an Energy Value Home Award and 'Builder of the Year.'

“This award is a great privilege and I'm grateful for all the help I get from my sub contractors and suppliers that help me achieve high building standards,” say Scott Bergford, founder and president of Scott Homes.

All Scott Homes are Five Star certified under the Olympia Master Builders' Built Green® program, are Energy Star certified, have radiant heat, and are built with structural insulated panels (SIPs) manufactured by Premier Building Systems, headquartered in Fife, WA, with manufacturing facilities in Fife and Phoenix, AZ.Scott Homes

Not familiar with the SIP system? Materials consist of two outer skins of oriented strand board (OSB) and an inner core of super-insulating expanded polystyrene laminated together to form a monolithic building panel with high-energy efficiency. They replace conventional stud or “stick frame” construction and need no additional insulation or skeleton for support. (Visit the SIP building industry news page for more information.)

In independent tests, the Washington State University Cooperative Extension Energy Program found that Scott Homes built with Premier SIPs, low-e double-pane glazing and radiant floor heating are predicted to save homeowners up to 60% per year on energy usage compared to a typical home. Most SIPs-built homes also qualify for a $2,000 federal tax credit.

Bergford is passionate about building homes that are energy efficient and friendly to the environment: “From the moment new clients first visit our office, the point is driven home that we care about energy efficiency, and that we are good at achieving it,” says Scott.

With more than a century of combined experience at Scott Homes, green building is certainly nothing new to this company. What’s more amazing is that this was the first time the company had entered the EVHA contest. EVHA judges described Scott Homes as “doing it all very well but constantly looking for ways to improve.” There were discussions about how the company “flawlessly and seamlessly” incorporates energy
efficiency and green aspects into its construction while doing “a really good job of improving its process and incorporating what it is learning.”

Scott Homes learned the intricacies of green home construction through a partnership with DOE’s Building America program and integrated that knowledge into its business philosophy. “They’re committed to the idea and are open-minded enough to try things and to make things work,” said one EVHA judge. “They even have a strategic plan that integrates the energy value-added proposition. They truly understand the value of building green – and they can pitch it!”

When it comes to “pitching it,” the builder says, “Our office walls are adorned with awards and certificates [from energy efficiency and green building programs]. From the moment new clients first visit our office, the point is driven home that we care about energy efficiency, and that we are good at achieving it.”

Ferrier Brings Home Gold EVHA

Longtime SIP builder Ferrier Custom Homes (Fort Worth, TX) Ferrier Custom Homes received a gold award in the hot climate, custom home categories in the 2009 Energy Value Housing Award (EVHA), presented by the NAHB Research Center.

“Ferrier Custom Homes produces a complete package, demonstrating a clear understanding of the concepts, value, and systems that create an energy-efficient home,” says Tom Kenney, vice president of engineering and research for the NAHB Research Center.Ferrier Custom Homes earned an Energy Value Home Award for this design

The home’s owners originally approached the builder with a desire to build a home honoring the philosophy of their parents and Depression-era grandparents — waste not, want not. Ferrier Custom Homes was more than happy to comply, carefully leaving not only the property’s mature trees but also a windmill that long-time residents say once was used by the Bonnie and Clyde gang as a hiding place for loot. But even the homeowners will admit that not everyone looking for an energy-efficient home will have a windmill in their backyard.

Now in its 14th year, the EVHA is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America program, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), in addition to the NAHB Research Center.

The panel of judges for the 2009 EnergyValue Housing Award included: Michael DeWein, technical director, Building Codes Assistance Project of the Alliance to Save Energy; Joe Gregory, Bob Ward Companies; David Hales, building systems specialist for the Washington State University Extension Energy Program; Lee Magnusson, research engineer, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL); Richard Morgan, green building manager for Austin Energy; and Barb Yankie, president of Homes +, Inc.

The EVHA judges were impressed by Ferrier Custom Homes’ long track record of dedication and their tireless effort to educate ‘anybody who’ll listen’ about the value of energy-efficient construction.

As one EVHA judge put it, “This builder demonstrates a complete understanding of the concepts, value, and systems that create an energy-efficient home.” Ferrier Custom Homes produces “a complete package” and attempts to “push the envelope and make sure it’s done right.” Doing it right, according to the EVHA judges, includes an “extensive cost benefit analysis used in the selection of equipment and materials for indoor air quality,” plus taking “great care to create the most energy-efficient home possible.” The judges added that the company’s marketing materials provide an “exceptional example of responsible marketing and commitment to educating consumers and the building industry.”
