Scott Homes Honored as 2009 EnergyValue Housing Awards 'Builder of the Year'

Scott Bergford, president and founder of Scott HomesThe NAHB Research Center, a subsidiary of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), has selected Scott Homes (Olympia, WA), as the 2009 EnergyValue Housing Awards (EVHA) Builder of the Year. The EVHA, presented in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), are the nation's preeminent energy efficiency awards honoring builders who voluntarily incorporate energy efficiency into all aspects of new home construction. Scott Homes also received an EVHA Gold Award for custom homes built in cold climates.

The award judges describe Scott Homes as, "Doing it all very well, but constantly looking for ways to improve. They truly understand the value of building green."

"This award is a great privilege and I'm grateful for all the help I get from my sub contractors and suppliers that help me achieve high building standards," say Scott Bergford, founder and president of Scott Homes. Scott Homes earned 2009 EVHA from the NAHB Research Center

All Scott Homes are Five Star certified under the Olympia Master Builders' Built Green® program, are Energy Star certified, have cozy radiant heat, and are built with structural insulated panels (SIPs) manufactured by Premier Building Systems (Fife, WA).

SIPs are one of the most energy efficient building systems on the market, using prefabricated insulated components to build the shell of the home or light commercial buildings. They consist of two outer skins of oriented strand board (OSB) and an inner core of super-insulating expanded polystyrene laminated together to form a monolithic building panel with high-energy efficiency. They replace conventional stud or "stick frame" construction and need no additional insulation or skeleton for support. Scott Homes also earned a gold EVHA in the cold climate category

In independent tests, the Washington State University Cooperative Extension Energy Program found that Scott Homes built with Premier SIPs, low-e double-pane glazing and radiant floor heating are predicted to save homeowners up to 60% per year on energy usage compared to a typical home. Most SIPs-built homes also qualify for a $2,000 federal tax credit.

Bergford is passionate about building homes that are energy efficient and friendly to the environment: "From the moment new clients first visit our office, the point is driven home that we care about energy efficiency, and that we are good at achieving it," says Scott.

Premier Building Systems, a division of Carlisle Construction Materials, leads the construction industry in the research, development and manufacturing of high-performance, energy-efficient structural insulated panels and innovative construction framing materials. Headquartered in Fife, Washington, Premier operates manufacturing facilities in Fife and Phoenix, Arizona.
