Pasadena Pool & Pavilion Project
Architect: Steven Nuetzel, Pasadena, Calif. http://nuetzelarchitect.com/ Project Type: ResidentialArchitect Steven Nuetzel was challenged to place a new lap pool, spa, and “pavilion” along the narrow crest of a 4-acre site overlooking the Arroyo Seco in Pasadena, Calif. The property’s spectacular views span from Mt. Lowe to Mt. San Jacinto on one side, to downtown Los Angeles, Catalina Island and the Pacific Ocean
on the other.
The compound has a common structural vocabulary of concrete piles, concrete block piers, and glu-lam beams. The integrated pool/pavilion structure would complete the composition of the remodeled main house and bookends a recently built detached garage on the far side.
To take advantage of the spectacular views, prevailing breezes and to preserve the compound’s common structural vocabulary, Nuetzel chose the reliability of Nana Walls. The fold-away walls of glass dramatically turn the structure into an open-air entertainment pavilion floating over the pool and spa. Of particular note is the corner application of the Nana Walls, which, when open, make the corners disappear.
