WASHINGTON, DC – Devastated communities from the south Florida to the Gulf Coast are finding that systems-built housing – construction methods that involve prefabrication, precise construction equipment, and unparalleled efficiency – are beneficial in the rebuilding process. Whether using concrete, log, modular, or panelized construction methods, rebuilding communities can take advantage of building systems’ increased speed of construction, energy efficiency, and a durable, precise finished product.
“All types of systems-built housing can be used to alleviate the hurdles facing rebuilding communities,” said David Endy, 2006 Chairman of NAHB’s Building Systems Councils. “Scarcity of building materials and skilled labor will be a challenge in the initial stages of rebuilding storm-ravaged communities and systems-built housing offers a viable and durable solution.” In 2004, more than 10% of all homes were built entirely or a majority through building systems, and hundreds of thousands of new homes included some elements of building systems.
The four building systems categories can create hundreds of individual styles of residential and commercial construction, from rustic timbers or modern chic to Southern gothic. This can help storm ravaged communities to rebuild, quickly, efficiently, with diverse design styles and with lasting durability.
Concrete Homes – An essential ingredient in 16% of all new homes constructed, above-grade concrete wall systems are quickly become the preferred building material in storm-prone communities. Many homes built with concrete exceed required local codes and standards while providing homeowners with a durable and sustainable finished product. For more information on concrete housing: www.nahb.org/concrete.
Log Homes – Contrary to conventional wisdom, modern log homes are designed and engineered to withstand not just hurricane-force winds, but the structural and wall timbers are built strong enough to deflect flying timber and debris. Several Log Homes Council members report owners of log homes housing neighbors and relatives during storms and homes resisting gale-force winds and staying structurally. Modular Homes – Built at least 90%-complete before ever arriving on a home site, a modular home can be constructed, set on-site and occupied in a little as a dozen weeks. Typically built with more raw materials and fastening systems than conventional housing, modular homes are built to meet or exceed all applicable construction codes. With credit to computer-assisted design programs, modular homes can be customized to fit the aesthetics of any community. For more information, visit www.nahb.org/modular.
Panelized Homes – The most wide-spread building system, panelized construction offers builders and home owners precise and durable components and limitless design options. Pre-constructed in a manufacturing facility for maximum efficiency and shipped flat to a home site, panelized homes are often weather-tight in as little as one day. Panels can be transported by a variety of methods. In recent months, donations of pre-fabricated wall, floor, and ceiling panels have been shipped into the Gulf Coast on a Mississippi River barge, originated as far away as Minnesota. ABOUT THE BSC: The Building Systems Councils is the umbrella organization that represents various segments of the systems-built housing industry. The BSC consists of the Concrete Home Building Council, Log Homes Council, Modular Building Systems Council, and Panelized Building Systems Council for home manufacturers, the Systems Builders Council for home builders, and the Associate Members Council for suppliers and affiliates within the industry.
